The Natural Planetary Trines

Often when thinking about aspects, we consider the signs which naturally form them. For example, the same elements forming a trine, or the same modality forming a square. Whilst aspects rely on the degrees of planets, there is still something to be said about the energy and bond of signs that will usually form aspects with others. We can say that earth signs are harmonious with each other as they is understanding and mutual respect, and this can be seen through the trine aspect that they may form with each other.

What is less talked about, however, is planets that form aspects. Some planets have a mutual reception and respect for each other due to how the ruling sign of them interact, which is what will be discussed in this post. The ruling trines of the planets are what I like to call ‘natural trines’ as the planets involved relate to each other due to their ruling signs. This theory can also be used with sextiles, squares, or any other aspect.

The trine aspect represents a link between planets which is beautiful, harmonious and understood. It is considered to be an easy aspect to have with luck affiliated with it. For this reason, if you have an aspect between two planets with this natural trine, you may find it is easy for you to develop or see within yourself. It may also bring you luck, as there is innate harmony between the planets, even if they are not in the signs they would usually rule.

First of all, it is key to note the primary ruler of each planet will be used. This means that Scorpio will be related to as Pluto ruled rather than both Mars and Pluto as this is the planet it embodies itself.

With no further ado, the planetary rulers are:

  • Sun: Leo
  • Moon: Cancer
  • Mercury: Gemini and Virgo
  • Venus: Taurus and Libra
  • Mars: Aries
  • Jupiter: Sagittarius
  • Saturn: Capricorn
  • Uranus: Aquarius
  • Neptune: Pisces
  • Pluto: Scorpio

This means that there is a natural trine between Sun, Mars and Jupiter as their primary rulers are Leo, Aries and Sagittarius. This trine involves confidence (Sun), drive (Mars), and growth (Jupiter). In the natural fire sign, becoming is of the utmost importance. People with Sun, Mars or Jupiter in aspect to each other will have a strong want for life and their goals which others may admire. There is a zeal for life and enthusiasm for development in these natives which does not come to others as easily. Interestingly, the key idea behind this trine is to enjoy life and improve the self, which is what the fire element is about. Fire wishes to experience and be the best they can be, much like people with Sun, Mars and/or Jupiter in reception to each other.

The natural trine between Mercury, Venus and Saturn sits in earth. This trine echoes the earthy spirit as it is all about working past barriers and problems in order to find love for others and the self. Mercury relates to communication and work, Venus relates to love and values, whilst Saturn is the planet of barriers and lessons to be learnt. If these any one of these three are in aspect within someone’s chart, they will have an instinctual want to better themselves and find solutions for the purpose of love. Note that this does not have to mean romantic love, it can be platonic love (talking arguments out with a friend), family love (advising a younger sibling) or perhaps self love (learning to ask for help in order to better one’s self).

Next is the air trine of Mercury, Venus and Uranus. It is similar to the earth trine in that it focuses on bettering and improving something, but the air natural trine focuses more on ideas and conceptual knowledge. Air is the element of adaptability and intelligence, often creating new ideas or concepts. Mercury deals with thought processes, Venus deals with aesthetics, and Uranus concerns itself with change and revolution. When the air-ruled planets come into contact in a chart, there is a natural want to create within the mind and possibly also put this out into the world. They may think on their feet faster than other people, or be able to assess things in more depth with less effort than those without the natural air trine.

Lastly comes the natural water trine of Moon, Neptune and Pluto. This trine carries the water characteristics of intuition, empathy and sentimentality. Water, as an element, wishes to feel deeply and often understand the inner lagoons of the mind more so than other people, much like people with these planets in aspect. The Moon is about the inner emotions, Neptune is about illusions and dreams, whilst Pluto is the ruler of transformation and intense life experiences. These three come together to form the basis of emotional being and growth. The natural water trine represents the part of the mind shaped by intense emotions, idealism, and also confusion. People influenced by the natural water trine may, for a lot of life, feel misunderstood by people without this influence.

** To be influenced by one of the natural planetary trines, you do not need to have the signs or the trine aspect! You may have Moon square Neptune, but the water trine could still feel like it is overshadowing this placement as Moon and Neptune both have water ruling. Please remember this idea is conceptual and not an informative archetype. **
