Olivia Crain: A Character Study

Olivia Crain, the mother in the Haunting of Hill House, is a patient, emotional and nurturing individual who appears to meet her untimely demise through no fault of her own, but instead fated paranormal happenings she has a gift she cannot control for.

Olivia loves her children endlessly, never scolding them for their antics or beliefs, but instead taking them in wholeheartedly. Her and her family live in Hill House as she is renovating it to sell on to fund designing her family’s dream home.

So, what can we make of her placements? What could her chart look like should she be real? Well…

Cancer Sun in 6th

Olivia makes her family her all, her routine, and what she bases her life around, pointing to her having Cancer Sun in the 6th house, binding family and lifestyle. Cancer is a sign known for being naturally motherly and caring, as well as having oceans worth of emotional understanding. Olivia represents Cancer Sun in that she’s always very compassionate towards her children and her sense of self is brightened by them. For instance, Olivia is the first person to catch onto Theodora’s physical clairvoyant sensing abilities, and when she does she is wholehearted and loving in helping her daughter find a way to ease and cope.

Virgo Moon in 8th

Olivia’s attitude is one of nurture, patience and reason. For this reason, her Moon could be Virgo in the 8th house as this Moon sign is reasonable and realistic, whilst also wanted to remain compassionate. Olivia finds her heart within her home, and homes are sacred to the soul, especially when shared with your family. This shows that her Moon is in the 8th house as the 8th house is all about trust and shared resources. Moon in the 8th also gives a head nod to the emotional trauma that Olivia goes through toward the end of her stay at Hill House.

Capricorn Rising

Her outlook on life comes from a place of nurture and planning. Her Cancerian placements cover her emotional self, whilst Capricorn is her level-headed and work-oriented brain. We can see that she has this axis in her as Olivia’s life revolves around developing Hill House to sell on whilst living there with her family, showing that whilst she gets stuck into her work firsthand (Capricorn Rising) and sees through a goal-oriented lens, she also has a profound focus on always keeping her family close and safe as they make her feel her most confident (Cancer Sun).

Cancer Mercury in 7th

Some of Olivia’s most special and sentimental moments come from her one on one conversations with others. She has special memories with her children when she speaks with her individually. Her words are filled with passion and love. I don’t feel I need to justify this one so much.

Taurus Venus in 5th

Olivia may be a Taurus Venus in 5th due to her choice of career. Taurus Venus is a sensual placement which enjoys pleasing the senses via textures, smells, looks. Aesthetics and investments correlate to this sign, and in Venus it shows a passion, talent and love for creating beautiful things. The 5th house relates to expression and creativity, and Olivia is obviously crafty and creative. We can see this in the Haunting of Hill House perfectly as she is into home design and creating of her home.

Capricorn Mars in 12th

This placement is more hidden inside Olivia, and the sign may be surprising. Mars in 12th relates to Olivia because Olivia’s energy takes place in the hidden and subconscious. Olivia has very vivid visuals and dreams which she is a part of, an energy for. This links to Mars in 12th as it is putting energy into the unconscious. The reason her Mars may be in Capricorn is for her traits when she is in this state. Olivia watches the scenes playing in front of her, narrowing down the possible signs to those who watch before they do. The three which come to mind first being Virgo, Scorpio, and Capricorn. I considered all of these possible, but ended up with Capricorn as I saw the other signs show themselves in her chart in other ways. Olivia’s Mars demonstrates things people can often forget about Capricorn: it links to overcoming barriers for a deeper goal. At her most negative point, Olivia, in her clairvoyant type vision where she is led astray by the character Poppy, believes that by taking the children’s lives she is overcoming an obstacle for a bigger goal. It also ties nicely to the Rising, which is our life lens, as she views this as correct. And so, Capricorn Mars in 12th is symbolic of Olivia’s plot function.

Scorpio Neptune conjunct Chiron

Scorpio Neptune conjunct Chiron is one of the placements I am most sure represents Olivia Crain as literally speaking this suggests deep wounds bound to taboo illusions, dark occult dreams causing and healing wounds, and so on. This placement is archetypal of Olivia’s story: dark paranormal hazes and illusions leading to wounds and pains.

Aquarius North Node square Scorpio Neptune and Chiron

Going off of the placement described above, I also think Aquarius North Node squares this as it appears there is nothing Olivia can do to stop herself going down the path of her ultimate demise. The reason I chose Aquarius was to represent the archetype of change and unusual happenings shown via Aquarius, as Olivia’s unfortunate path toward death and possession would be seen as unusual.

Writing a review of Olivia, I had plenty more specific aspect ideas, such as Libra Pluto forming t squares and so. I believe there’s a lot of chart combinations which could be in Olivia to explore a multitude of dynamics.
