Theodora Crain: A Character Study

Theodora Crain is the middle child in the Haunting of Hill House and a mysterious and complex individual for those around her to pin down. She doesn’t want to keep people close, and yet has the power to keep anyone closer than they are even aware. Theo knows she isn’t perfect and she self sabotages her relationships with others (like Trish), but ultimately she’s still a very wise and mature woman, just one that doesn’t take her own advice.

So what’s her chart going to say on that?

Libra Sun in 11th

Theo shows this placement as, when her anger or emotions aren’t involved, she is someone who mediates her communities maturely. She’s also a psychologist, which has reflections of the fair and just Libra Sun shining over their society in the 11th house. This placement is also a matured front for the things she hides further within herself and her chart.

Cancer Moon in 8th

Whilst a lot of the placements in the Crain family are not too developed, Theo’s Cancer Moon in 8th is more matured in her use of it, undoubtedly thanks to growing up with a sensing power linked to it: her touch shares others feelings. Cancer Moon is a powerful Moon placement as the Moon naturally responds within Cancer, and so this placement can be linked to heavy and intense emotions. It is then cardinal, giving it a sense of emotional creation. On top of this the 8th house is the house of shared resources, as well as taboos, traumas and occults. Theo matures all her powers into this exact placement as she uses her intense emotional sensing abilities to help children and others through traumas using her ability to created a shared connection to their feelings.

Sagittarius Rising with Neptune in 1st

This placement gives Theo were strange and other worldly edge. As far as any Crain can be, she’s fun loving and free spirited, showing us a peculiar Sagittarius Rising lens. She is also then hard to pin down and understand, which is the haze created by her Neptune in 1st. This then also pays homage to her ability to see into others minds and feelings.

Scorpio Mercury in 12th

Scorpio Mercury is one of the placements representative of the depths of Theo that she doesn’t let us see. She keeps her cards glued closely to her chest and tries not to emotionally confide in someone, which links to Scorpio Mercury in the 12th as Scorpio is a naturally hesitant sign when it comes to trust, and the 12th house is a house of the hidden, meaning her communication and friendship (Mercury) are hidden under layers upon layers of mystery and barriers.

Scorpio Venus in 12th

This is a further point like the one above, Theo is someone who prefers discreet love and somewhat fears intimacy until the end, where she finally moves out with Trish and allows her fully into her life (or so we assume). This is again because Theo demonstrates to us a wounded and guarded sense of love, which subtly hints to us that Theo heavily values trust in relationships (and is partly why she doesn’t get close, because you can’t just trust anyone, in her opinion).

Aries Mars in 5th

For Theo, Aries Mars in 5th is an extension of what we learn from Sagittarius Rising: despite everything, she’s a girl who wants to have fun and let loose a bit more than her other siblings want to. She’s also got a sexual appetite, which links to Aries Mars in 5th as Aries Mars is a where Mars is at home, and the 5th house links to sex, making her sexual energy very powerful and intense. She also likes to go clubbing and doesn’t mind that she’s alone when she does, because Aries Mars is an independent trail blazer, and when placed in 5th, her trail is of self expression.

Cancer Chiron in 8th

This placement is really another layer of Theo which has been highlighted already: she shares in other’s emotional pain and uses her own wounds to heal others, which is typical of the mixing of Cancer, Chiron, and the 8th house.

Sun opposite Mars

In Theo, we see Sun opposite Mars in how her actions never reflect on what she wants for herself to make her happy. She won’t let Trish in deeper to her heart because she doesn’t want to tangle her into her complicated life, and she uses her cold and detached ego to front her impulsive and fiery actions, showing us an Aries-Libra opposition.

Thank you for reading this character review and remember there is no right or wrong!
