Attraction In Astrology: Exoteric And Esoteric Attraction Calculations

After receiving a lot of interest in my method of taking three signs and working out which sign they best embody and attract as a whole, I decided to put the workings into a post. But first, we have to understand where we may look within the houses for attraction.

In western astrology, each house shows us a different part of life. The houses in question in this post are:

The First House: This is the house of the self, the ego, and the confidence. It is what we project onto the world and how we navigate it.
The Fifth House: Representing our self expression and talents amongst other things, this is what people may view in us as positive and something to admire.
The Seventh House: This is the traditional house of relationships and our ways with one another. It shows how we are with our relationships.
The Eighth House: The house of shared resources, but also of deeper hidden investigation. It can have links to obsession due to it being Pluto’s home.
The Tenth House: In this case, we are talking about its links to public image. It can show us what people will immediately see of our persona.
The Eleventh House: Communities, groups and society are represented here. This house can show us how we navigate friend groups and communities.

These houses can show us what kind of signs or elements we tend to attract in our lives. For example, someone with Aries Rising (First House) and Leo Fifth House will definitely attract a lot of fire placements. If someone has a Cancer Midheaven (Tenth House) and Leo Eleventh House, whilst they may attract these two signs and elements, it may be not as simple to work out which specific other signs will be attracted. That’s where planetary rulers come in.

With Cancer Midheaven, Moon in the planetary ruler of the 10th house. You can then look to your Moon placement and this could tell you something of the kind of people you attract. For instance, if it’s Virgo Moon, perhaps Virgos find you instantly appealing. Check the first post on attraction for more on attraction with sun, moon, rising and stellia. You can also, however, then look to linked signs.

To follow the example, Moon is shining over the Tenth House. So, we can then look at information about the Moon. The Moon is ruled by Cancer, and exalts in Taurus, as we all know. This means it also feels at home in the fourth house and the second house. It also means Capricorn is its detriment and Scorpio is its fall, making these signs, the eighth house and the tenth house unfavourable. Immediately from this, someone with Cancer Midheaven may attract a lot of Cancerians or Taureans, but may feel rigidity from Capricorns or Scorpios due to that lack of immediate understanding.

However, they won’t only attract these two. They will also attract the esoteric ruler of the Moon: Virgo. Esoteric rulers are the spiritual innards of the planet. We attract them because there is an underlying level of understanding which goes beyond the immediate.

So, how do we apply this to our whole chart? Surely we’d just end up attracting everyone?

I most commonly use this method of calculating attraction on three dominant signs, although it can also be done to two or three houses of your choosing. Here are some of the mixes you could use for different levels of attraction:

  • First Attraction: First House (Rising), Fifth House, Tenth House (Midheaven)
  • Romantic Attraction: First House (Rising), Fifth House, Seventh House,
  • Sexual Attraction: Fifth House, Seventh House, Eighth House
  • Admiring Attraction: Fifth House, Eighth House, Tenth House
  • Friendly Attraction: First House (Rising), Seventh House, Eleventh House
  • Overall: Three dominant signs

To give an example of how to calculate attraction using the exoteric and esoteric ‘adding up’ method, I will demonstrate overall attraction using my three dominant signs: Libra, Virgo, Sagittarius

First, we start by looking at the elements and modalities being mixed together.

Air, Earth, Fire – Cardinal, Mutable, Mutable

Here, I can see it’s likely I may pull another mutable sign out of the three as this is the more dominant modality. There is no obvious element, although if the sign were to be water, it would complete the elements within the mix.

Then, we analyse the rulers, followed by the exaltations.

Venus, Mercury, Jupiter – Saturn, Mercury, N/A

Again, there is no stand out planet as of yet, since Virgo is the reason Mercury appears twice. Before moving onto esoteric planets, however, we must look at other signs linked to these planets to form a sub conclusion.

Venus: Taurus, Pisces
Mercury: Gemini
Jupiter: Pisces, Cancer
Saturn: Capricorn, Aquarius

I notice that on three occasions a mutable sign appears, which I predicted as two of my dominants are mutable. I also predicted it is likely water would be a fitting element, and Pisces appears twice: relating both to Libra and Sagittarius. In this case, it does also relate to Virgo as it is it’s sister. Therefore, I can make a half conclusion that Pisces is likely to be the sign I pluck out.

Now, we analyse the esoteric rulers as conformation. In some cases, a conclusion is not already prominent, so it is more needed than it is now. So, which planets do I look at? I take the sign’s usual ruling planet, and then check it’s esoteric ruler.

Venus: Gemini
Mercury: Aries
Jupiter: Aquarius

Pisces has not appeared this time, however Gemini has. Gemini now has a link to both Libra and Virgo, but also Sagittarius as its sister. It is also mutable, as expected. Aries has appeared for the first time, and whilst it now has one link to each (sister to Libra, mercury ruled like Virgo, and fire like Sagittarius), it is not the obvious answer due to the links only happening once. Aquarius has also appeared twice. It now linked Libra and Sagittarius, but does not have a link to Virgo.

You then reverse the esoteric study, now taking your dominant signs and looking at their esoteric ruler.

Libra: Uranus
Virgo: Moon
Sagittarius: Earth

In this case, Sagittarius’ ruler is not applicable to the current results as no sign is ruled by the Earth exoterically. However, we can take Uranus and Moon and find the other signs linked to them:

Uranus: Aquarius (generational planets are in debate as to where they exalt, so there is no sure exaltation)
Moon: Cancer, Taurus

Again, Aquarius appears with a link to Libra. Cancer has also appeared again, but instead linking to Virgo, rather than Sagittarius. It links modality to Libra, but cardinal only appeared once my dominants, where mutable did twice, so is less likely to be the answer.

After collecting all the different parts of data, relist your three signs (in my case, dominants) with all the sign links you have found. This is simply the signs which you discovered above.

Libra: Taurus, Pisces, Gemini, Aquarius
Virgo: Gemini, Aries, Cancer, Taurus
Sagittarius: Pisces, Cancer, Aquarius

Next, cut the list down to only those that appear twice or more.

Libra: Taurus, Pisces, Gemini, Aquarius
Virgo: Gemini, Cancer, Taurus
Sagittarius: Pisces, Cancer, Aquarius

In this instance, we are still left with a lot of signs. Here is where we apply the elements and modalities again. I had one cardinal and two mutable dominants, and these gain another link to me. I had one air, one earth and one fire dominant, so no element is particularly attracted to me. However, it would make sense for water to be attracted and for me to be attracted to water, as it fits the puzzle. For this reason, I will shorten the list to mutables and water signs.

Libra: Pisces, Gemini
Virgo: Gemini
Sagittarius: Pisces

As we can now see, after our calculations, I’m left with Gemini and Pisces! Where I would usually lack an immediate reason to attract these signs just looking at my chart, if I take my dominants and investigate them, I can see it actually makes a lot of sense for me to attract them. They are mutable, like me, with links to Venus (Pisces is where it exalts, and Gemini is its esoteric ruler), Mercury (Gemini co-rules it), and Jupiter (Pisces co-rules it), which are the ruling bodies of my dominant signs.

Hopefully this how to in exoteric and esoteric calculations is easy to do, and you uncover signs you attract or are attracted to!
